Pep Guardiola Puts Erling Haaland on the Same Level as Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the Champions League
With records falling at his feet and goals pouring in, Haaland is already being compared to the two giants of modern football.
A Record That Changes Everything
Erling Haaland continues to smash records at an unstoppable pace. The Norwegian striker for Manchester City scored his 50th Champions League goal in just 49 matches, becoming the fastest player ever to reach the milestone. With a lethal header against Napoli, he broke the record of Ruud van Nistelrooy, who needed 62 games to achieve the same tally.
The goal, perfectly served by Phil Foden, sealed a 2-0 win for the English side and reignited the debate about just how high the striker’s ceiling might be. “The numbers speak for themselves,” admitted Pep Guardiola, visibly impressed by his forward.
Compared With the Giants
Far from his usual caution, Guardiola was clear in placing Haaland among a select elite. “He’s at the level of Van Nistelrooy or Lewandowski, but especially of two monsters like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi at 15 or 20 years old. Erling is right there. In terms of goals, he’s incredible,” said the coach.
For a manager like Pep, who lived closely through Messi’s golden era, to put the Norwegian in that category shows just how much impact the striker is having at only 25 years old.
The Heir to the Throne?
The inevitable question arose: can Haaland surpass Cristiano Ronaldo’s 140 goals, the all-time Champions League scoring record? Guardiola didn’t hesitate. “If he keeps up this pace, yes. He can play another 10 or 12 years; if he maintains this progression, no doubt he will,” he stated.
With such backing and a frightening scoring average, Haaland seems determined to write his name alongside the two defining figures of modern football.
