Napoli earned their first win of the 2026-27 Champions League after edging Bodo/Glimt 4-3 in a topsy-turvy clash at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
Napoli 4-3 Bodo/Glimt: McTominay brace helps Allegri to first Champions League win
Massimiliano Allegri finally has a first Champions League victory with Napoli under his belt as they edged a thriller against Bodo/Glimt.
Matteo Politano struck in the opening minute, before the two teams traded goals between Jens Petter Hauge, Scott McTominay and Andreas Helmersen.
McTominay's second of the match was then followed by an Odin Bjortuft own goal, which eventually proved the winner after Sonder Fet set up a nervy finale with a 94th-minute header.
There were only 54 seconds on the clock when Politano rifled in Leonardo Spinazzola's pinpoint cross with a stunning volley.
Noa Lang and Rasmus Hojlund both passed up presentable opportunities before Hauge equalised against the run of play with a lovely low curler through the crowded Napoli box 27 minutes in.
But Napoli were back in front four minutes before the break after McTominay combined with Kevin De Bruyne and got a stroke of luck as his strike looped in despite Nikita Haikin getting a full hand on it.
McTominay then struck the post with a first-time effort on the hour, and it proved a costly miss as Bodo equalised again in the 62nd minute when Helmersen drilled his low strike past Alex Meret.
Bodo continued to push but McTominay put Napoli back in front against the run of play 13 minutes later, rising high to nod Politano's cross past a helpless Haikin.
With two minutes of the 90 remaining, Bjortuft slid in to try and block Giovane's low cross from the left, but his touch inadvertently helped it sneak in at the near post, as Haikin had been poised to collect behind him.
Fet, who had an impressive game as he also racked up assists for the first two goals, nodded in from a yard out after Bjortuft's looping volley struck the underside of the bar, but there was not enough time for Bodo to find a late equaliser.
Allegri eases some pressure as Italian sides enjoy Champions League
Massimiliano Allegri has found himself under some pressure after his start to life at Napoli, but he now has a first Champions League win under his belt that moves the team into the play-off places.
In fact, the win ended a five-game winless streak in the competition (D1 L4), and they bagged four goals in a Champions League match for the first time in 25 games since beating Ajax 4-2 in October 2022.
At 54 seconds, Politano's opener for Napoli was their fastest-ever goal in the Champions League, but it was McTominay who stole the show.
He has scored 29 goals in all competitions since joining the Partenopei, 11 more than any other player for the club in that time (Hojlund has 18). He also now has seven Champions League goals, the outright most by a Scottish player (Kenny Miller next on five).
But Napoli were not the only team that netted four goals, with Roma also getting off the mark in the competition as they brushed aside Slovan Bratislava 4-0, with Mario Hermoso, Nahuel Molina, Niccolo Pisilli and Donyell Malen doing the damage.
Elsewhere, though, there was disappointment for Atletico Madrid, whose six-game winning streak in all competitions came to an end. They came from behind to draw 1-1 with Stuttgart – who had dominated the first half – with Julian Alvarez scoring, though they had to hold onto the point after Morten Hjulmand's sending-off.
