Mourinho Shuts Down Debate Over Alexander-Arnold’s New Position
The Real Madrid boss assessed the experiment against Inter and made his stance on the Englishman’s future in midfield perfectly clear.
Real Madrid began their UEFA Champions League campaign with a 2-1 victory over Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabeu, but one of the biggest surprises of the night was the role given to Trent Alexander-Arnold. The Englishman moved away from right-back to partner Federico Valverde in midfield.
Jose Mourinho’s decision was heavily influenced by Real Madrid’s list of absentees. Eduardo Camavinga, Arda Güler and Bernardo Silva were all suspended, forcing the Portuguese manager to find an alternative solution in the middle of the pitch.

“He has played midfield with England and Liverpool... but he is not a midfielder,” Mourinho said. Nevertheless, the manager praised the way Alexander-Arnold handled his tactical responsibilities alongside Valverde.
“He has played very well. He has interpreted what he needed to really well, tactically. Both him and Valverde have worked very well at this level,” Mourinho added, praising an improvised partnership that ultimately helped Madrid secure all three points.
Physical Demands Took Their Toll
The biggest difficulty came physically. Mourinho explained that playing in central midfield places completely different demands on Alexander-Arnold compared to his usual role at full-back, particularly because of the spaces he has to cover and the constant intensity required in the middle of the pitch.
“It’s hard for Trent. I appreciate the effort he made, but with his characteristics, the specificity needed to play full-back or central midfield is completely different physically,” the Portuguese coach explained.
That physical toll became increasingly evident late in the game, eventually leading to Alexander-Arnold being substituted. “He’s played there a few times with Liverpool and the national team, but it’s completely different. He didn’t have more to give,” Mourinho said.
Where Will Alexander-Arnold Play for Real Madrid?
His performance against Inter has reopened the debate over Alexander-Arnold’s role in a squad packed with alternatives. Since arriving from Liverpool, the defender has had to fight for playing time, while the signing of Denzel Dumfries has created even greater competition at right-back.
The Netherlands international started three of Real Madrid’s opening four LaLiga matches, meaning Alexander-Arnold no longer has the guarantee of regularly occupying the position that was effectively his own for years at Anfield.
His versatility could continue to create opportunities elsewhere, but Mourinho has now drawn an important distinction: Alexander-Arnold can play in midfield when circumstances require it, but his manager does not consider him a midfielder.
