Mourinho Defends Vinícius: “He Is Not Obligated to Give More”

José Mourinho came to the defense of Vinícius Junior following Real Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Inter Milan. The Brazilian forward was booed by a section of the fans, but the Portuguese coach made it clear that he is satisfied with his commitment and work for the team.

“He is not at his best, and that is something we can all see. He knows it, he is the first to know it, and he is working very hard to become the Vinícius who decides games,” Mourinho explained at a press conference.

The coach acknowledged that the Brazilian has yet to rediscover his best form, although he emphasized that his effort has been evident both in training and during matches.

Mourinho Backs Vinícius’ Work

For Mourinho, Vinícius’ performances cannot be judged solely by his goals or attacking contributions. The Portuguese coach highlighted his willingness to sacrifice for the team and fulfill his collective responsibilities.

“If he works for the team, he will always have my support. That does not mean he always has to start or play all 90 minutes,” he said.

The coach recalled that he knows perfectly well how capable the Brazilian is of deciding games after facing him last season with Benfica. However, his message was clear: “Anyone who gives everything is not obligated to give more.”

Kylian Mbappé was also booed when he was substituted. Mourinho refused to criticize the fans and explained that his gesture toward the Frenchman as he left the field was enough to show how he felt.

“When he was substituted, I gave him a kiss, and for me that means respect for the work he did for the team,” he said.

Courtois and Valverde Play Key Roles Against Inter

Speaking about the match, Mourinho admitted that the game was far from the level of control he wants from Real Madrid. He even suggested that the scoreline could have been much higher because of the chances created by both teams.

The Portuguese coach particularly praised Thibaut Courtois, whom he considered decisive in securing the victory.

He also praised Federico Valverde, who scored the second goal after taking advantage of a mistake by Josep Martínez caused by Real Madrid’s high press.

“Valverde’s goal was no coincidence. It was a great interpretation by Fede of the strategy we had,” he explained.

Despite the boos, Mourinho continues to trust Vinícius and expects the Brazilian to soon rediscover the version of himself capable of deciding and winning games for Real Madrid.
