Manchester City begin their 2026-27 UEFA Champions League campaign on Tuesday, September 8 with a trip to face FC Porto at the Estádio do Dragão, an immediate test for a team expected to challenge for the trophy.

Enzo Maresca’s side have opened the Premier League season with three consecutive victories and arrive in Portugal carrying plenty of momentum. Their only competitive defeat of the campaign came in the Community Shield, where they suffered a 3-0 loss to Arsenal.

Porto have been just as impressive domestically. Francesco Farioli’s Dragons have won their opening five Primeira Liga matches, meaning City will face a confident opponent with home-field advantage behind them.

The depth of City’s squad gives Maresca the ability to field an extremely dangerous attacking lineup without sacrificing control in midfield. The challenge will be dominating possession while avoiding the kind of transition opportunities Porto have punished so effectively during their excellent start to the season.

Rodri is expected to play a crucial role in front of the defense, while Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki could provide the creativity and line-breaking ability City need to unlock Porto.

At the other end, City’s defense will need to keep a close eye on André Silva, who has already scored twice this season and enters the matchup as one of Porto’s biggest attacking threats.
