Luis Enrique Reveals PSG’s Plan to Stop Lamine Yamal

  • The Spanish coach knows exactly how he wants to limit Barcelona’s biggest threat ahead of a huge Champions League showdown.

Luis Enrique Knows How He Wants to Stop Lamine Yamal

Luis Enrique is not planning anything overly complicated to stop Lamine Yamal. Ahead of Paris Saint-Germain’s meeting with Barcelona, the Spanish coach summed up his approach with one simple idea: if the teenager does not get the ball, he cannot hurt PSG.

“It’s very simple: we mustn’t let him get the ball, because if he does, he’s a threat,” Luis Enrique said at his pre-match press conference. Rather than assigning someone to follow Yamal everywhere, the PSG coach believes controlling possession and cutting off the supply is the best way to limit him.

It will be a huge challenge. Barcelona have won their first 11 matches of the season, while PSG now have the chance to become the first team to beat them.

Keep the Ball Away From Barcelona, Not Just Yamal

Luis Enrique’s thinking is straightforward. Instead of reacting every time Yamal receives the ball in a dangerous position, PSG want to prevent Barcelona from settling into possession and building attacks in the first place.

“The best way to defend against Lamine is to ensure Barca don’t have the ball,” he said. But the coach was also quick to point out that Barcelona’s threat goes well beyond one player.

Luis Enrique named Raphinha, Pedri, Pau Cubarsí and Joan García among the many players PSG must deal with. The message is clear: stopping Yamal matters, but focusing too heavily on him could give the rest of Barcelona’s attacking weapons more room.

Luis Enrique Dismisses Lionel Messi Comparisons

The PSG coach also pushed back against attempts to measure Yamal against Lionel Messi, comparisons that have followed the teenager throughout his rise to the top level.

“Lamine Yamal wants to be Lamine Yamal. We cannot compare him to Messi or anyone else,” Luis Enrique said. “He is very intelligent and has to continue to be himself.”

For the PSG boss, Yamal has already built enough of a reputation on his own. He enters the match as one of the biggest concerns for a team that knows giving him space could completely change the game.

Facing Barcelona Still Means Something to Luis Enrique

There is also an obvious personal element to the matchup. Luis Enrique both played for and coached Barcelona, but he made it clear that those emotions take a back seat once the game begins.

“I’m the PSG manager. At first, I found it hard to play against Barca, but I got used to it. Despite everything, I want to win tomorrow,” he said. The Spaniard admitted that facing the club that has meant the most to him during his career provides extra motivation, but his loyalties now lie firmly in Paris.

There is another incentive as well: ending the perfect start of Hansi Flick’s team. Luis Enrique acknowledged that becoming the first side to beat Barcelona this season would give PSG even more motivation.

Still, he refused to treat the game as anything decisive. The Champions League campaign is only beginning and, despite the stature of the two teams, this is not a final. For Luis Enrique, the outcome will come down to small details and which side is better able to impose its style.
