Luis Enrique aims to avoid 'crazy' finish in PSG's crunch clash with Newcastle
Luis Enrique is hoping to avoid any late drama as Paris Saint-Germain look to secure their spot in the Champions League last 16.
Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique has had enough of "crazy" late drama as he aims to secure his team's place in the last 16 of the Champions League.
The European champions were beaten 2-1 by Sporting CP last week, with all the goals coming in the final 20 minutes.
That defeat left PSG in sixth in the standings ahead of facing Newcastle United at home in their final match of the league phase.
A win on Wednesday would ensure PSG's automatic qualification for the knockout stage, but failure to claim the three points would likely mean they have to go through the play-off route, as they did last year.
And Luis Enrique knows it will be crucial for PSG to exert some control on proceedings.
"Against Newcastle, we need to try to control all phases of the game, especially in the last part of the match," he said.
"The result will only be good for one of the two teams; I hope the last part of the match won't be crazy."
But Luis Enrique was happy with how PSG played against Sporting.
He added: "It's football. You have to be calm, analyse everything. I really like to say that I love the way we played. If we score our goals, it's perfect."
While PSG are eager to avoid the play-offs, Luis Enrique quipped he would take missing out on the top eight if it meant retaining their crown.
"I'd take losing or drawing, if you tell me I'm in the [play-offs] and I win the Champions League," he said.
"The real Champions League starts then in the knockout stage. In the knockout stage, we're an incredible team and we're going to prove it again."
PSG and Newcastle's only previous meetings came in the 2023-24 Champions League group stage – they drew their meeting at the Parc des Princes (1-1), after the Magpies had won 4-1 in the first game at St. James' Park.
"I've completely forgotten about that defeat, it's been two years," said Luis Enrique.
"Many players have arrived, others have left. We're playing much better than in that match. It's going to be difficult but we're quite confident. The key is to play the way we usually do, with our strengths and talents."
Luis Enrique also confirmed he has a full squad to choose from, as he joked "the Champions League is the best medicine" when it comes to injured players recovering quickly.
