Fenerbahçe Look to Bounce Back on a European Night in Istanbul

The UEFA Champions League returns to Istanbul with an important encounter between two teams still searching for their first victory in this season's competition. Fenerbahçe and Slavia Prague meet on Matchday 3 knowing that another disappointing result could seriously damage their hopes of progressing.

The Turkish side are determined to respond after suffering a humiliating 6-0 defeat against Aston Villa in their previous European fixture. That result raised serious questions about their defensive organization, and they now have an opportunity to deliver a much-needed response in front of their supporters.

Fenerbahçe are also enduring a remarkable winless streak in the competition. The club have not won a match in the main stage of the Champions League since April 2008, when they defeated Chelsea 2-1 in the quarterfinals.

Since then, they have gone nine consecutive matches without a victory at this level.

Their return to Europe's elite competition after 18 years has generated considerable excitement among supporters, but it has also highlighted the challenge of competing against the continent's strongest teams.

Slavia Prague Aim to End a Historic Winless Run

The situation is equally challenging for Slavia Prague.

The Czech side lost their opening two league-phase matches, falling 3-2 to Lens before suffering a 2-0 defeat against Sabah. Those results have increased the pressure on a team desperate to collect its first points.

Their most concerning statistic is a run of 21 consecutive matches without a victory in the main stage of the Champions League.

Their last win came in September 2007 against Steaua București, meaning a victory in Istanbul would end a 19-year wait.

Jindřich Trpišovský's team are also chasing their first away victory in the history of the competition.

Despite those disappointing numbers, the Czech club have reasons to believe they can compete. In 2022, they eliminated Fenerbahçe from the UEFA Conference League, winning both legs 3-2.

A European Rivalry With Unfinished Business

Recent meetings between the two clubs have produced competitive encounters.

Slavia Prague won both matches in 2022, but Fenerbahçe responded in November 2024 with a 2-1 victory in Prague during the UEFA Europa League.

Now, the two sides meet again on an even bigger European stage.

For the Turkish club, players such as Romelu Lukaku, Mason Greenwood, N'Golo Kanté, and Milan Škriniar provide the experience and quality needed to compete at the highest level.

Meanwhile, Slavia Prague will rely on their collective organization, aggressive pressing, and experienced players such as Tomáš Holeš, David Zima, and Mojmír Chytil.

Both teams share the same objective: securing three points to improve their position in the standings and keep their European ambitions alive.
