(VIDEO) All Goals: Manchester City Open Their 2026-27 UEFA Champions League Campaign with Victory at FC Porto
Erling Haaland was the standout performer in this match, as the Cityzens had to work hard against a physical FC Porto side and the outstanding goalkeeping of Diogo Costa, the “Dragons” goalkeeper.
Manchester City got off to a winning start in the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League League Phase, defeating FC Porto 2-0 away from home at the Estádio do Dragão. The standout player of the night was Erling Haaland, who scored both goals to seal the victory.
The English side had to work hard against a well-organized Porto defense that managed to limit Haaland's influence for much of the first half. Goalkeeper Diogo Costa was also instrumental, making several key saves to deny the Norwegian striker and keep the game level heading into halftime.
HAALAND BREAKS THROUGH PORTO'S DEFENSIVE WALL
Manchester City's persistence finally paid off early in the second half. Enzo Fernández recorded his first assist for the English club, delivering a precise cross that Haaland powered home with a header to open the scoring al 47 minute.
With the lead, FC Porto pushed forward in search of an equalizer and created a few chances, but efforts from William Gomes and Alan Varela failed to find the back of the net. Francesco Farioli made changes to his lineup, including bringing on Mexican striker Santiago Giménez in the 72nd minute, but the equalizer never came.
Just when the match appeared to be heading toward a narrow City victory, Haaland struck again. In the 91st minute, the striker received a pass from Rayan Aït-Nouri inside the box before firing a low shot into the net to complete his brace and secure a valuable away win.
With the result, Manchester City takes its first three points in the Champions League and builds momentum ahead of another demanding fixture. Porto, meanwhile, will have to bounce back when it travels to face Real Betis in its next European match.
