Bodo Glimt wrote the most important chapter in their history in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night. The Norwegian side claimed their first-ever win in the competition with a stunning 3-1 victory over Manchester City, European champions, at the intimate Aspmyra Stadion, which holds just over 8,000 spectators.
The small but hostile venue proved enough to unsettle a City side that never imposed its authority. Goals from Kasper Høgh, the standout performer with a brace, and Jens Petter Hauge, who struck from the edge of the box, exposed Pep Guardiola’s team, now facing pressure in the race for a top-eight finish.
Haaland takes full responsibility
City managed to pull one goal back through Rayan Cherki in the 60th minute, but it was far from enough to change the outcome. After the match, Erling Haaland was the first to face the media — and he did not hide from the truth.
“It’s embarrassing,” said the Norwegian striker, City’s top scorer this season with 26 goals, before taking the blame. “I take full responsibility for not scoring and I apologize to everyone — especially the fans who traveled here. In the end, it’s embarrassing,” he admitted.
“It’s not good enough for Manchester City”
Haaland was also clear when distributing responsibility, pointing to leadership rather than excuses. “The responsibility is mine, Rodri’s, Gigio Donnarumma’s, Tijjani Reijnders’ — the experienced players,” he explained.
His closing message was unmistakable: “I don’t want to blame anyone, but we have to take more responsibility. It’s not good enough. We are Manchester City, and we cannot go without winning games.”
A warning sign in the Champions League
While Pep Guardiola admitted he feels that “everything is going wrong,” Haaland’s words reflect a dressing room shaken, but fully aware of the standards required when wearing the City badge.
The defeat in Bodo was not only historic for the Norwegian club. For Manchester City, it was a serious European warning — and a night their biggest star refused to let pass without saying exactly what needed to be said.
