Erling Haaland Downplays Comparisons with Messi and Ronaldo: “No One Can Get Close to Them”
The Norwegian responded humbly to Pep Guardiola’s praise, after the coach placed him alongside the two greatest legends in world football
Erling Haaland once again proved that, beyond being a goal-scoring machine, he remains firmly grounded. Ahead of the Champions League clash between Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund, the Norwegian striker was asked about Pep Guardiola’s recent comments comparing him to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for his influence on the game. His reply was clear: “No one can get close to them.”
“I’m very far away. No one can match what they’ve done. Their numbers are untouchable,” Haaland told reporters, downplaying the significance of the records he is on the verge of breaking. The 24-year-old has already scored 26 goals for City and Norway this season and is closing in on 100 Premier League goals, a milestone no player has ever reached so quickly.
Guardiola Elevates Him Among the Greats
Guardiola’s comments after City’s 6–1 win over Bournemouth sparked the debate. “It’s like when you had Messi or Cristiano—their impact on the game is enormous. The difference is they’ve done it for fifteen years, but this is that level,” said the Spanish manager, amazed by the Norwegian’s relentless goal-scoring form.
Haaland, however, responded with humility, insisting he doesn’t focus on comparisons or personal records: “My job is to help the team win games. I’m not obsessed with numbers or goals. I just want the team to win, and if I can contribute, even better.”
A Hungry Striker Who Puts the Team First
With 13 goals in the Premier League, Haaland leads the scoring charts in England, well ahead of any of his Manchester City teammates. Still, the striker emphasized that his ambition isn’t just individual: “My biggest goal is to take Norway to a major international tournament. That would mean more than any personal record.”
As he prepares to face his former club, Borussia Dortmund, this Wednesday, the Norwegian continues to show why he’s one of the most dominant players in world football. His power, discipline, and competitive mindset have made him the natural heir to the goal-scoring throne—though he himself refuses to wear that crown.
While Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have already written their chapters in football history, Haaland is only beginning his—with a humility that sets him apart just as much as his ability to shatter nets.
