Diego Simeone’s Fortune: How Atletico Madrid Exploded in the Champions League
Even after falling short of another Champions League final, Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid continue dominating a different game: the financial one.
Simeone’s Atletico missed the dream final… but won a historic fortune
While criticism once again surrounds Atletico Madrid for failing to lift the Champions League trophy, the financial reality tells a completely different story. The project led by Diego Simeone has become a true money-making machine for the club, transforming Atletico into one of the most profitable teams in European football over the last decade.
According to financial reports published by UEFA, Atletico have already generated almost $1 billion solely from their Champions League appearances since the arrival of the Argentine manager. A staggering figure that confirms how “El Cholo” not only changed the club’s mentality on the pitch, but also elevated its financial status.
Although elimination against Arsenal delivered another painful sporting blow, the economic gains continue to rise. This season alone, Atletico have already secured approximately $88 million, a figure projected to surpass $124 million once UEFA distributes the so-called “value pillar”, the new system combining television markets and club coefficients.
The Champions League transformed Atletico into an economic powerhouse
The stability achieved by Simeone since 2013 completely changed Atletico’s financial reality. Before his arrival, the club constantly lived under both sporting and economic pressure. Today, the Champions League represents one of the institution’s biggest revenue engines.
Just in the current campaign, the club earned:
- $21.8 million for participating in the league phase.
- $9.8 million from victories.
- $13 million for reaching the Round of 16.
- $14.6 million for playing in the quarter-finals.
- $17 million for reaching the semi-finals.
And that still does not include the commercial and television revenue distributed by UEFA at the end of the tournament. Based on last season’s projections, Atletico could finish this campaign above the $117 million mark.
Even though the club continues obsessively chasing the Champions League trophy, the reality is that Atletico have already found in Europe a source of revenue capable of competing with historic giants such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich.
Their constant presence in the Champions League has also helped improve sponsorship deals, strengthen the club’s global brand, and maintain a competitive squad for more than a decade.
Simeone built a project as profitable as it is competitive
Beyond the sporting results, the Simeone era has become one of the most profitable projects in modern football. The Argentine coach led Atletico to finals, semi-finals, and consistent knockout appearances against Europe’s elite, dramatically increasing the club’s overall value.
The financial impact also contributed to the club’s structural growth, including stadium development, new investments, and greater stability under the leadership of Enrique Cerezo and the club’s management.

Atletico’s biggest challenge: turning millions into trophies
Even so, Atleti has left us with a major question: what's the point of generating so much money if the Champions League title keeps slipping away?
The truth is that the club have come painfully close several times. Lost finals, heartbreaking eliminations, and knockout ties decided by tiny details have fueled the feeling that the project still needs one final step to enter football’s historic elite.
However, very few managers can claim to have transformed a club the way Diego Simeone has. The Argentine took an inconsistent Atletico side and turned it into a global brand now generating figures close to one billion euros in Europe’s biggest competition.
