Chaos in Bruges: Barcelona Fans Cause Turmoil Before Champions League Match
FC Barcelona once again finds itself in the spotlight — not for its performance on the pitch, but for the behavior of some of its supporters. Ahead of their Champions League clash against Club Brugge, one Barça fan was arrested for setting a bus on fire, while two others are being investigated for possessing flares inside and outside the Jan Breydel Stadium.
According to Belgian authorities, the incident occurred when a fan lit a flare inside a bus transporting Barcelona supporters, sparking a blaze that quickly engulfed part of the vehicle. Local police responded immediately and proceeded with the arrest. FC Barcelona confirmed that the detainee is a former club member and currently part of an official supporters’ group.
The chaos forced authorities to suspend the shuttle service designated for visiting fans, prompting a heavy security operation around the stadium. In addition, two other fans were caught carrying pyrotechnics; the club is awaiting confirmation on whether they are active members to determine possible internal sanctions.
Dangerous Repeat Offense: UEFA Could Punish Barcelona
This new incident could have serious disciplinary consequences for Barcelona. The European governing body had already sanctioned the club last season after some supporters displayed Nazi symbols in Monaco, resulting in a fine and a ban on selling tickets to away fans for their next European trip.
Although thirteen months have passed since that punishment, the use of flares and pyrotechnic material remains a serious violation of UEFA regulations, meaning Barça could face another penalty. If the repeat offense is confirmed, the club risks being forced to play an away match without its supporters present.
During the game, several Barcelona fans ignited flares in the visitors’ section, causing thick smoke that required medical intervention. At least one supporter had to be resuscitated by emergency personnel.
Lamine Yamal Shines Amid the Controversy
While chaos unfolded off the field, young star Lamine Yamal continued to impress on it. The forward scored in the 3-3 draw against Brugge and said he felt “calm and happy” despite ongoing rumors about his physical and mental state. “I try not to read what’s said about me. I’m fine and working hard to stay at this level,” he told Movistar Liga de Campeones.
The 17-year-old also downplayed the boos from the Belgian crowd, saying, “If they boo, it’s because they know I’m doing my job well.”
Between the excitement over its emerging talent and the concern over fan behavior, Barça now faces a familiar dilemma: unchecked passion could once again cost them dearly in Europe.
