Barcelona files UEFA complaint over refereeing vs Atlético: “Not the first time”
Barcelona have officially filed a complaint with UEFA over the refereeing in their Champions League clash against Atlético Madrid.
Barcelona have officially filed a complaint with UEFA over the refereeing in their Champions League clash against Atlético Madrid.
The club is questioning the performance of referee Istvan Kovacs during the quarterfinal first leg.
The controversial play
The complaint focuses on a moment inside the box where Marc Pubill allegedly handled the ball after receiving it from goalkeeper Juan Musso.
Barcelona argue it should have been penalized as an improper restart.
“The club believes this decision, along with the serious lack of VAR intervention, constitutes a major error”, the statement said.
They also requested:
- An official investigation
- Access to referee communications
- Recognition of potential mistakes
“Not the first time,” Barcelona say
Barcelona also stressed that similar situations have occurred before.
They claim that recent Champions League decisions have unfairly affected the team and created an imbalance.
Flick had already spoken out
Head coach Hansi Flick had already criticized the incident after the 2-0 defeat.
“It’s very clear the defender handled the ball and nothing was called. I don’t know why VAR didn’t intervene”, he said.
Despite the controversy, Flick remains confident his team can overturn the result.
