A Supercomputer’s Predictions for the Champions League
Opta’s analyzer declared a possible champion and the chances of the other teams to win the Champions League
Arsenal, champions?
Opta’s prediction machine analyzed the numbers from this Champions League and named a possible winner. This season’s Champions League has been dominated by the English ‘Big Six’; five of the six teams have qualified for the top eight, securing direct passage without a playoff. Based on these league-phase results, Opta’s prediction and data analysis engine designated Arsenal as the team with the highest chance of winning the tournament.
Arsenal leads Opta’s probability rankings with a 28.3% chance, a significant margin over the rest of the Champions League. Behind them is Bayern Munich with a 15.9% chance of winning the top prize; Barcelona rounds out the podium with 8.8%, while Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain complete the top five with 7.4% and 6.2%, respectively.
How does the Spanish rivalry factor into this prediction?
Barcelona managed to break into the top three teams with the best chances of winning the Champions League, while Real Madrid today has only a 3.2% chance of pulling off another epic comeback.

Matches are meant to be played
This analysis method only takes into account the teams’ numbers, and at the end of the day in the Champions League and in any soccer match, there are many more variables than just statistics. In matches where the risk of losing and being eliminated is much higher, preparation, character, and the team’s overall strategy will be factors to take into account.
