A New Clash Between Vinícius and Xabi Alonso After His Champions League Substitution
Another substitution, another flare-up: Vinícius Jr.’s frustration with Xabi Alonso is becoming impossible to ignore.
The Telling Gesture
It’s becoming a pattern: every time Vinícius Júnior leaves the pitch, his frustration is visible. This time it happened in Kazakhstan during the Champions League clash against Kairat Almaty. In the 70th minute, Xabi Alonso substituted him along with Mastantuono, bringing on Brahim Díaz and Rodrygo.
The Brazilian couldn’t hide his displeasure. He left the field gesturing and muttering, though he did shake hands with the coach and staff when reaching the bench. The scene, now familiar, once again raised questions about his relationship with the Spanish manager.
Xabi Alonso’s Response
After the match, Alonso attempted to downplay the controversy in his press conference: “It wasn’t frustration. Another day, maybe, but today it wasn’t like that. Vini’s comment wasn’t what people think. We understood him, and there’s nothing to it.”
Even so, the images told a different story. Vinícius has already had several public displays of irritation, and with his lack of impact in the Champions League, the spotlight on his attitude is only growing.

Still Waiting for a Breakthrough in Europe
The Brazilian left Kazakhstan with no goals or assists, just as in the opener against Olympique de Marseille. Overall, he has played nine games this season, completing only two (against Levante and Atlético Madrid in LaLiga).
His record so far—three goals and four assists—doesn’t quite match the expectations of a player meant to lead Madrid’s attack. For now, his competitive edge seems at odds with Alonso’s management, and the tension between star and coach is hard to ignore.
