Why Michael Jordan Cashed In on PSG’s Champions League Glory
Thanks to his long-standing business relationship with Paris Saint-Germain, the basketball icon is reaping the rewards of the club’s latest success in Europe.
Paris Saint-Germain fans—and football supporters around the world—are still celebrating the club’s historic back-to-back UEFA Champions League titles. But there is one person who may be smiling even more than anyone else: basketball legend Michael Jordan, who stands to benefit financially from the French club’s latest European triumph.
WHY IS THE GOAT CELEBRATING PSG'S SUCCESS?
The man many consider the greatest basketball player of all time has a unique connection to the Parisian giants. Jordan Brand serves as the official kit supplier for Luis Enrique’s squad, meaning the excitement surrounding the reigning European and French champions is generating massive revenue—some of which ultimately finds its way to Jordan himself.
Jordan’s relationship with Paris dates back to 1985, when he visited the French capital during a Chicago Bulls tour. Years later, Nike’s commercial partnership with PSG helped strengthen the connection between the NBA icon and the football club.
That relationship reached a new level in 2018, when PSG and Jordan Brand signed a landmark agreement that made the iconic Jumpman label the club’s official lifestyle and apparel partner. The deal ended PSG’s long-standing direct association with the traditional Nike branding after more than three decades.
Neymar’s arrival in Paris also played a key role. The Brazilian superstar was already one of Jordan Brand’s most prominent athletes, making the collaboration even more attractive for PSG. While Jordan Brand operates independently, it remains a subsidiary of Nike, ensuring the sportswear giant remained firmly involved.
The agreement between Jordan Brand and PSG is reportedly worth more than $93 million per season and runs from 2019 through 2032.
HOW MUCH DOES JORDAN EARN FROM THE PARTNERSHIP?
Jordan reportedly receives a royalty of around five percent on merchandise sales featuring the famous Jumpman logo. The agreement also includes PSG’s highly popular alternate and special-edition jerseys.
Following the club’s Champions League triumph in Budapest, commemorative merchandise celebrating PSG’s second consecutive European crown has become some of the hottest football apparel on the market. As demand surges, so do the financial rewards.
THE NUMBERS BEHIND THE BOOM
While official figures have not been released, sports merchandise retailer Fanatics reported that approximately 250,000 PSG jerseys were sold across 70 countries within the first 12 hours after the club secured the Champions League title. That represented an astonishing 4,200 percent increase compared to a normal sales day.
Those sales are estimated to have generated more than $23 million in revenue. Based on a five percent royalty structure, Jordan could have earned roughly $1.15 million from those sales alone—and that does not include purchases made through PSG’s official stores or other retail partners around the world.
Not a bad payday for The GOAT.
