Why Has Luis Enrique’s PSG Become Hansi Flick’s Barcelona’s Worst Nightmare This Season?
The Parisian side halted the momentum of the Barça squad, widely considered by many to be the best team in the world. The reason may surprise you.
Paris Saint-Germain defeated Barcelona 4-2 in the UEFA Champions League, handing Hansi Flick’s side their first official defeat of the season and leaving the German manager just short of celebrating his 100th victory. Luis Enrique’s team delivered a commanding performance, setting records, scoring decisive goals and exposing a worrying trend for the Catalan giants.
PSG TOPPLE BARCELONA, EUROPE’S BEST TEAM?
Barcelona had won their first 11 official matches of the season, but PSG brought their perfect run to an end. Following this result, Bayern Munich, with seven wins and three draws, remained the only unbeaten team across all competitions among clubs from Europe’s five major leagues.
Barcelona had been widely regarded as one of the best teams in Europe and the world, but they were brought down by a Parisian side that struggled at the start of the campaign and has gradually regained momentum in Ligue 1 while establishing itself as a team to beat in UEFA’s premier club competition.
Can Flick’s Barcelona bounce back and secure his 100th win in the Spanish Clásico when they host Real Madrid in LaLiga this weekend?
LUIS ENRIQUE GETS THE BETTER OF FLICK AGAIN
The Spanish manager secured his third consecutive Champions League victory over Barcelona, following wins in 2024 (4-1) and 2025 (2-1). Only Julian Nagelsmann had achieved a similar run, beating Barça four times with Bayern Munich between 2021 and 2022.
Luis Enrique’s record now stands at three wins in six matches against the Catalan side, after losing his first three encounters: twice as Celta Vigo manager between 2012 and 2014, and once in charge of PSG in the first leg of the 2023-24 Champions League quarter-finals.
PSG also became the third team to score four goals against Flick’s Barcelona in this competition, following Benfica’s 5-4 victory in Lisbon and Inter Milan’s 4-3 win in the second leg of the 2025 semi-finals, which eliminated the Spanish club.
Meanwhile, Barcelona have now conceded in 18 consecutive Champions League matches, the longest such streak by a Spanish club in the competition’s history.
PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN EXPOSE BARCELONA’S WEAKNESSES
To make matters worse, the LaLiga leaders allowed 15 shots on target, the highest number Barcelona have faced in a competitive match in the Champions League over the past decade. The total even surpassed Bayern Munich’s 13 shots on target during their historic 8-2 victory in 2020.
Désiré Doué scored and provided an assist for the second consecutive Champions League match, reinforcing his importance to PSG. The French club has never lost a match in which the young forward has scored.
In addition, Lucas Hernández netted his fourth Champions League goal and his second against Barcelona. Both goals against the Catalan club came from headers, one while wearing Bayern Munich’s shirt and the other in PSG colors.
Barcelona have once again proved to be a favorable opponent for the French defender.
