What Injury Does Koundé Have and Will He Be Fit for the Champions League Second Leg Against Inter?
Jules Koundé's status is now uncertain for FC Barcelona's crucial second leg against Inter Milan in the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League semifinals, following a muscle injury sustained in the first leg. The French defender was subbed off in the 42nd minute of the 3-3 draw at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, and a medical report issued by Barcelona on Thursday, May 1 confirmed the injury — but offered no timeline for recovery.
Injury Comes at a Crucial Moment
The club reported that Koundé is dealing with a distal injury to the femoral biceps in his left thigh. The issue flared up late in the first half of the April 30 clash, and he was replaced by Eric Garcia.
With the second leg scheduled for Tuesday, May 6 at the Giuseppe Meazza, and a potential LaLiga-deciding Clásico against Real Madrid coming on Sunday, May 11, the timing of the injury could not be worse for Hansi Flick's side — who are still fighting for the Champions League, LaLiga, and already secured the Copa del Rey.
No Natural Right-Back Replacement
Koundé has been one of Barcelona’s most used players this season, leading the team in minutes played (4,505), matches (55) and starts (51). His absence would leave a major gap, especially at right-back.
With no natural replacement, Flick may be forced to improvise. Possible options include:
- Eric Garcia , who has filled in at right-back in recent matches
- Ronald Araújo , a central defender with past experience in the position
- Promoting Héctor Fort, though he’s seen limited action this season
- Shifting Gerard Martín to the right, if Alejandro Balde recovers in time from a similar thigh injury
