Pep Guardiola: "No regrets"
The Manchester City coach congratulated Real Madrid on their passage to the semifinals. He assured that they tried everything. "We can't win every time."
Pep Guardiola, Manchester City's coach, stated that they gave their all against Real Madrid but it wasn't enough against the Spanish side, who defeated them in the penalty shootout to reach the semifinals in what the coach described as "a fantastic way to lose."
"I would have preferred to win, of course. First of all, congratulations to Real Madrid for reaching the semifinals. Madrid defended very deep, with a lot of solidarity. We gave everything, I have no regrets. We did everything, both defensively and offensively. That's how it is," said Guardiola in a press conference.
"The three games were very similar, they defended deeper, we created many opportunities, but it's about scoring goals. They will be in the semifinals and we won't, because of small details. Sometimes you win penalties, sometimes you don't. We didn't convert the opportunities we had. We were all at our best level, to beat Madrid you have to be at 100%, we were, but it wasn't enough."
"I don't judge. It's Carlo's decision," the Spanish coach pointed out about Ancelotti's defensive approach. "In another sport, statistically, we would have won, but football has this wonderful aspect."
"As a coach, all I can ask of my players is this. Of course, I give credit to Madrid, they were able to hold on and resist. We have faced many closed teams and always found a way to find a gap, but today we lacked that."
"Luck doesn't exist, and I agree. We didn't manage to score. We did everything. What a fantastic way to lose. It hurts today, but tomorrow we have to get up and continue. We can't win all the time."
