Henry Gives in to Lamine Yamal and They Make a Curious Pact for El Clásico
Thierry Henry and Lamine Yamal had a brief conversation for ‘CBS Sports’ following his outstanding performance against Inter Milan
The assist on the first goal by Marcus Thuram and his later brace earned Denzel Dumfries the UEFA Man of the Match award in the game against Barcelona in the first leg of the Champions League semifinals. However, all the fans left Montjuic with the feeling that Lamine Yamal had delivered one of the greatest performances in Champions League history… at just 17 years old.

“What I saw from Lamine Yamal tonight was not normal.”
From the CBS Sports studio, Thierry Henry felt exactly the same way and, although in the past he had warned about the risks of placing too much pressure on young players—based on his experience at Barcelona with Bojan Krkic—he couldn’t help but be amazed by what Lamine Yamal had done. In his 100th match with Barcelona, Lamine Yamal became the youngest player ever to score in a Champions League semifinal.
“What I saw from Lamine Yamal tonight was not normal. It’s not normal to play like that at 17. I’m not talking about what he does with the ball, but his awareness, his calmness, the way he sees the game, how he defends, how he presses the opponent... it’s simply not normal,” said Thierry Henry, who also added: “What surprises me is that you always think there will never be anyone like Pelé, Maradona, Messi, or Cristiano. But then you see a player like Lamine Yamal…”
Henry asked Lamine Yamal for his jersey
After the match, Lamine Yamal and Thierry Henry had a fun conversation, in which the French former player—who won the treble with Barcelona in 2009—asked Lamine Yamal what his secret was for performing at such a high level in a competition like the Champions League at just 17 years old. “I just try to enjoy it, that’s the secret. Enjoy, don’t overthink, show my football, and try to make people enjoy watching a game. Things are going well for me. I haven’t done anything yet, I still have a lot to do, a lot to create, and I hope things go just as well in the return leg,” said Lamine Yamal.
Henry couldn’t hide his admiration for Lamine Yamal. “I really enjoy watching you play,” Henry admitted. In fact, he told him he’ll be at El Clásico against Real Madrid and asked if he could have his jersey to give to his son. Lamine Yamal agreed… but first, he proposed a curious deal. “We have to do an exchange. You give me yours and I’ll give you mine. From Barcelona, Arsenal... whatever you want.”
