Hansi Flick rages over refereeing in Champions League semifinals
FC Barcelona coach Hansi Flick was disappointed after his team’s elimination following a 4–3 loss to Inter Milan, which knocked them out of the Champions League final. The German manager expressed frustration with the refereeing during the match at the Giuseppe Meazza: “Every 50-50 call went in favor of the Italian side,” he claimed.
Criticism of the referee and pride in his team
“I don’t want to say too much about the referee. It wouldn’t be fair to my team, who gave it their all. I already told him what I thought of his performance,” he added in the post-match press conference. Despite the loss, Flick highlighted his players’ effort and urged them to pick themselves up and keep pushing.
The coach asked his squad to now focus on the final stretch of LaLiga EA Sports, where the Catalan side still holds a four-point lead over Real Madrid. “Of course they’re disappointed after the match. We have to accept it—it’s football—but we can be proud of our performance. I am proud,” he said.
Looking ahead
“We’re out, but we’ll be back. Hopefully next year we can play at home with an atmosphere like today’s,” the German coach said, offering a hopeful message to Barça fans ahead of next season.
The coach from Heidelberg also acknowledged that his team needs to improve in several areas: “We conceded seven goals across the tie with Inter, so we’ll improve defensively and also offensively. We’ll learn, it’s part of the process—we want to keep growing.”
Finally, Hansi Flick ended his press conference by wishing “good luck to Inter” ahead of the big final in Munich, which will be played on May 31.
