Flick Highlights Yamal, Confirms Key Absence and Urges Joy Ahead of Champions League Semifinal
Hansi Flick praised Lamine Yamal, acknowledged a sensitive absence in the squad, and asked his players to enjoy the moment ahead of the decisive Champions League clash between Barcelona and Inter Milan.
“We need to enjoy this moment”
Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick spoke to the media ahead of Tuesday’s second leg of the Champions League semifinals against Inter Milan, which will be held at the Giuseppe Meazza. The German’s message was clear: “I want my players to enjoy this match. We’ve already won two titles this season, and we should appreciate how far we’ve come.”
Flick emphasized that games of this magnitude help players grow and develop. With the Spanish Super Cup and Copa del Rey already secured, and the club still in contention for both LaLiga and the Champions League, he urged his team to take pride in their journey.
However, he also confirmed a key absence in the squad, referring to the left-back position without naming Alejandro Balde. He mentioned that Ronald Araujo, Gerard Martín, and Héctor Fort are all possible replacements and can contribute to a positive result.
Regarding Robert Lewandowski, Flick stated that the Polish striker has recovered from his muscle injury but is not yet ready to start. “He’s feeling good and will be on the bench. If we need him, he’ll be available,” he said.
Yamal, the genius leading Barça’s charge
A large part of the conversation centered around Lamine Yamal, who was instrumental in the 3-3 draw in the first leg. Flick did not hold back in his praise for the young star. “He’s in excellent form. That goal in the first leg was incredible. He needs to keep showing his potential,” the coach remarked.
He confirmed that Yamal will start in Milan and described him as a “genius” who gives the team an edge. “Our goal is to reach the final, and to do that, we need everyone performing at their best,” he added.
Nonetheless, Flick acknowledged that his side must improve defensively. “We have to defend much better than we did in the first leg. Inter is an experienced, powerful team, very difficult to contain.”
He also warned of their strength on set pieces: “In Montjuïc, they capitalized on their chances. Tomorrow, every player has to stay focused and committed defensively. That will be the key.”
