Deschamps Gives Blunt Reaction When Asked About PSG in the Champions League Final
The French manager makes it clear he supports Paris Saint-Germain despite his Marseille past and Inter players in his squad.
Didier Deschamps, head coach of the France national team, didn’t hesitate when asked who he’ll be supporting in the Champions League final between Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan. His response was both sharp and revealing, especially for those who assumed his loyalty still lay with Marseille, the club he captained to European glory in 1993.
“Are You Seriously Asking Me That?”
During the press conference where he announced the French squad for the Nations League Final Four, Deschamps was asked about his preference for the Champions League final. His initial reaction was one of disbelief: “Are you seriously asking me that?”
He quickly put the issue to rest. “There’s a French team in the final, so it’s obvious—I want PSG to win,” he stated plainly, despite his past ties to Olympique de Marseille.
Backing PSG for the Good of French Football
Deschamps expressed pride in seeing a French club reach the biggest stage in European football and was unequivocal in his reasoning. “Even though I have two players in the Inter squad, Benjamin Pavard and Marcus Thuram, I’m not thinking at that level. Of course, it would be the best thing for French football if Paris Saint-Germain wins,” he said.
He emphasized that his role as national team coach takes precedence over any club allegiances, and that success for PSG on the continental stage would boost the image and reputation of French football as a whole.
The public backing of someone like Didier Deschamps—a World Cup and Champions League winner as both a player and a manager—sends a powerful message. Regardless of the club colors he once wore, he’s firmly aligned with what he sees as the broader interests of French football.
With the final fast approaching, Deschamps has made his position unmistakably clear. And he didn’t mince words.
