Fenerbahçe Defeat Liverpool to Secure First Champions League Win Since 2008

Fenerbahçe defeated Liverpool 3-2 on Tuesday to claim their first victory in the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League season and their first win in the competition since 2008. Eighteen years later!

The Reds opened the scoring in the 25th minute through Trey Nyoni. Dominik Szoboszlai sent a cross into the heart of the box, which Fenerbahçe defender Archie Brown headed away. However, the clearance fell straight to the English midfielder, who fired home first time to put Liverpool ahead.

The visitors' lead did not last long. Fenerbahçe leveled the score in the 29th minute when Mason Greenwood found the net with a free kick that curled through the wall. The Englishman got his reward for an outstanding performance.

Andoni Iraola made changes after the break, and they paid off. Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo came off the bench and combined to put Liverpool back in front in the 68th minute. The Dutchman delivered a cross from the right, and the Swedish striker finished with a powerful header.

But the Yellow Canaries refused to give in. Greenwood sparked another dangerous move from a corner, playing a short pass to N'Golo Kanté, who sent a cross into the box. Gakpo got a touch on the ball, redirecting it toward Archie Brown, who arrived at the far post and tapped it home to make it 2-2.

Then came the drama: Vedat Muriqi scored the winner with a determined header after Archie Brown delivered a cross from the right, completing a memorable 3-2 comeback for Fenerbahçe.
