(VIDEO) Neymar Jr gets sent off with Santos after scoring a “Hand of God”-style goal
Neymar was back in action for Santos FC this Sunday in the Brasileirão, after a month out with injury — but things didn’t exactly go smoothly. The Brazilian star was sent off in the 75th minute after scoring a goal with his hand, in a move that reminded many of Maradona’s Hand of God.
He was already on a yellow
The former Barcelona and PSG player had already picked up a yellow card in the first half for a rough challenge. In the second half, he tried to head in a cross, but when he couldn’t reach it, he blatantly used his hand to push the ball into the net. The ref had no doubts — second yellow, then red.
Just five minutes after Neymar’s red card, Arthur scored the winner for Botafogo (1–0), making things even worse for Santos, who now sit deep in the relegation zone. Botafogo jumped up to eighth place with 15 points, while Santos are stuck on just eight.
During the 75 minutes he played, Neymar looked like someone still shaking off injury. He wore a compression sleeve on his right arm, looked sluggish, and wasn’t his usual sharp self — though he did have a few flashes of his trademark skill.
Contract almost up
This was his second-to-last game before his contract runs out on June 30. There’s been no confirmation of a renewal or any talks about extending his stay. On top of that, he’s likely to **miss the next match against Fortaleza on June 12, as he could face at least a one-match ban after that red card.
