Why did Galatasaray show its support for Colombia?

Galatasaray took a message of solidarity with those affected by the earthquake onto the field, with Davinson Sánchez providing the Colombian connection within the Turkish club's squad.

The players warmed up in shirts carrying messages dedicated to Colombia before opening their new Süper Lig campaign against Çorum.

Sánchez also provided one of the notable pre-match moments when he approached the stands to greet Galatasaray supporters.

Colombian soccer postponed after earthquake

The División Mayor del Fútbol Colombiano (Dimayor) postponed its competitions until August 19, including Primera A, Primera B and Copa Colombia.

“We understand that Colombia is going through a moment that affects us all,” Dimayor said when announcing the decision and expressing its solidarity with those affected.

CONMEBOL and the Colombian Football Federation (FCF) also announced a joint $1 million donation to support reconstruction efforts.

Thousands of miles away from Colombia, Galatasaray joined the displays of solidarity before beginning its Süper Lig season, making it an especially meaningful occasion for Davinson Sánchez.
