Samsunspor are experiencing one of the most difficult periods in their recent history. After impressing Turkish football with strong performances over the past few seasons, the club now find themselves near the bottom of the Süper Lig standings and dangerously close to setting an unwanted record.
The Unwanted Süper Lig Record Samsunspor Could Set
The Turkish club is enduring a major sporting crisis and stands just one defeat away from establishing the longest losing streak in its history. Even a managerial change has failed to stop the alarming decline.
A crushing 4-1 defeat to Kasımpaşa on Matchday 8 extended their losing streak to six consecutive league matches. That result equaled the longest run of defeats in the club's history, leaving Samsunspor just one loss away from establishing a new negative milestone.
The contrast with the club's recent success could hardly be more striking.
Samsunspor finished third in the Süper Lig during the 2024-2025 campaign, subsequently representing Turkey in European competitions and reaching the Round of 16 of the UEFA Conference League in 2025-2026.
However, the 2026-2027 season has brought a completely different reality.
The team opened their domestic campaign with a 3-3 draw against Göztepe, followed by a 2-0 away victory over Çaykur Rizespor. Those four points suggested a promising start, but everything quickly unraveled.
Under German head coach Thorsten Fink, Samsunspor suffered consecutive defeats against Fenerbahçe (0-2), Kocaelispor (0-1), Çorum FK (1-5), Erzurumspor (0-1), and Trabzonspor (0-3).
Across those five matches, the team scored just once while conceding twelve goals, exposing serious problems at both ends of the pitch.
A Managerial Change That Failed to Stop the Slide
The alarming results eventually led to Thorsten Fink's departure, with Croatian manager Nenad Bjelica appointed to turn the situation around.
However, his first match in charge offered little reason for optimism.
Samsunspor suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat away to Kasımpaşa, extending their losing streak to six consecutive matches.
With only four points from eight games, the club sit 17th in the 18-team Süper Lig, occupying one of the relegation places.
Even more concerning, Samsunspor have scored just two goals while conceding sixteen during their six-match losing streak, statistics that underline the scale of the crisis.
One More Defeat Could Make Unwanted History
The situation could become even worse on Saturday, October 24, when Samsunspor host Amedspor at the Samsun Yeni 19 Mayıs Stadium on Matchday 9 of the Süper Lig.
Another defeat would extend their losing streak to seven matches, establishing the longest run of consecutive league losses in club history.
Previously, Samsunspor had suffered six consecutive defeats in 1998, 2006, and 2023, a negative record they have now matched during the current campaign.
Avoiding that unwanted milestone will be anything but easy.
Amedspor have emerged as one of the biggest surprises of the season, collecting 17 points from their opening eight matches. The team currently sit second in the standings, just two points behind league leaders Galatasaray.
For Nenad Bjelica, the upcoming fixture will also mark his first home match in charge of Samsunspor, adding further pressure to an already crucial encounter.
The mission is clear: secure their first home victory of the season, end the losing streak, and begin climbing away from the relegation zone.
Otherwise, Samsunspor will enter the history books for a reason their supporters would much rather forget.
