The Player Who Was Once a Legend and Now Drives for Uber
Galatasaray has just secured its fourth consecutive Super Lig title, matching a historic feat the club had only achieved once before: during the 1990s under manager Fatih Terim, with Hakan Sukur leading the way on the pitch.
That squad marked a golden era for Turkish football and turned Hakan Sukur into one of the most important players in the club’s history. However, the legendary striker’s life today is completely different and far removed from the spotlight that once surrounded his career.
A Legend of Galatasaray and Turkish Football
Hakan Sukur played 393 matches for Galatasaray and scored 228 goals, numbers that place him as the second-highest scorer in the club’s history. During his different spells with the team, he won eight league titles and was one of the key figures in the historic squad that captured the 1999/00 UEFA Cup, defeating Arsenal in Copenhagen. To this day, it remains the only European title in Galatasaray’s history.
For Gala supporters, Sukur remains an eternal symbol. His name is tied to some of the greatest moments in the history of both the club and Turkish football. However, he now lives far from Turkey and from the football environment that once made him an icon.
At 54 years old, he resides in California, where he works as an Uber driver, sells books, and also coaches children while living a much quieter and more discreet life.
The Historic World Cup Record
His legacy with the Turkey national team is also enormous. With 51 goals in 112 appearances, he remains the country’s all-time leading scorer. He also owns one of the most remarkable records in World Cup history: the fastest goal ever scored in the FIFA World Cup.
In the third-place match of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, Hakan Sukur scored against South Korea after just 11 seconds, helping Turkey secure the best World Cup finish in its history with a memorable third-place result.
In addition, Hakan Sukur remains the all-time top scorer in the Super Lig with 249 goals and was a three-time scoring champion during Galatasaray’s legendary four-title streak. He also shares the record for most goals in a single league season with Metin Oktay, both scoring 38 goals.
Today, as Galatasaray once again dominates Turkey, many fans remember the striker who made an entire nation dream. Because even when life changes, legends never truly leave football.
