Super Salah leads a big weekend for Süper Lig’s super stars

The opening week of the Turkish Süper Lig was full of surprises, but Matchday 2 belonged to the stars. Some of the biggest names from a headline-grabbing summer transfer window delivered memorable moments for soccer fans across the country.

As the pace of the season gradually picks up, seeing the league’s new stars make such an early impact has only added to the excitement about what lies ahead.

SALAH ROLLS BACK THE YEARS

Only a few months ago, Mohamed Salah was bringing Liverpool fans to their feet. This time, it was the Trabzonspor crowd celebrating the Egyptian superstar.

Salah scored both goals as Trabzonspor defeated Başakşehir 2-1 at home, announcing his arrival emphatically. Remarkably, he also had two other efforts ruled out for offside, adding another layer of drama to an eventful night.

After such an impressive display, all eyes will now be on Salah to see whether he can maintain this level of performance in the weeks ahead.

OSIMHEN’S SHOW GOES ON AT GALATASARAY

After opening the new season with a surprising draw against Çorum FK, Galatasaray picked up its first league win on the road.

The Yellow-Reds cruised to a dominant 4-0 victory away at Erzurumspor, with Victor Osimhen stealing the show with two goals. The emphatic win provided some much-needed reassurance for Galatasaray supporters after the four-time defending champions had made an uncertain start to the season.

THE GREENWOOD EFFECT AT FENERBAHÇE

Fenerbahçe, another team on the wrong end of a Week 1 upset after losing to Gençlerbirliği, responded by claiming its first victory of the season with a 4-2 win at home.

Mason Greenwood was the standout performer with two goals, while Vedat Muriqi scored his first since returning to Fenerbahçe. Another of the Yellow Canaries’ stars, Marco Asensio, also got his name on the scoresheet.

Meanwhile, new signing Romelu Lukaku entered the game in the 68th minute to make his Turkish Süper Lig debut. Although the Belgian striker couldn't find the net, his work rate earned plenty of applause from the home crowd.

BEŞİKTAŞ SUFFERS FIRST DEFEAT

After beginning the season with a 1-0 victory over Eyüpspor, Beşiktaş found itself on the opposite end of the same scoreline, falling 1-0 away to Alanyaspor.

The Black Eagles struggled to play at their usual tempo, with the heat in Alanya also taking its toll. Nuno Lima scored the only goal of the match in the 73rd minute.

New signing Dušan Vlahović came off the bench in the 57th minute and used his strength to trouble the Alanyaspor defense. However, the Serbian striker’s contribution was not enough to prevent Beşiktaş from suffering its first defeat of the season.

AN ANKARA STORY: GENÇLERBİRLİĞİ

There was plenty more to talk about elsewhere in Matchday 2.

Gençlerbirliği defeated Göztepe 1-0 on the road to become the only team in the Turkish Süper Lig to win both of its opening two matches. Goalkeeper İrfan Can Eğribayat’s penalty save proved to be a turning point, with the winning goal arriving shortly afterward.

Gaziantep FK’s scoring machine Deian Sorescu produced another spectacular goal to secure a 1-0 victory over Eyüpspor. In a meeting between two of Anatolia’s strongest sides, Samsunspor earned an impressive 2-0 road win against Çaykur Rizespor.

In the final game of the week, Kocaelispor defeated newly promoted Amedspor 2-0 thanks to a superb goal from Berkan Kutlu.

Another action-packed, high-scoring week of Turkish Süper Lig soccer is now in the books.

If the opening two weeks have taught soccer fans in Türkiye—and everyone following the Turkish Süper Lig—one thing, it is this: in this league, there is simply no room for mistakes.
