Is Mohamed Salah the Greatest Signing in Süper Lig History?
The Egyptian arrived at Trabzonspor as a global superstar and has already made an impact on and off the pitch. But Turkish football has welcomed some legendary names before him.
The arrival of Mohamed Salah at Trabzonspor felt different from the start. This was not simply another famous veteran choosing Türkiye for the final stage of his career. One of the defining players of the Premier League era had just landed in the Süper Lig.
Salah arrived as a free agent after nine seasons at Liverpool, where he finished with 257 goals in 442 appearances, two Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy. Trabzonspor signed him to a two-year deal, instantly turning his arrival into one of the biggest stories in Turkish football.
That makes the question unavoidable: is he the greatest signing a Turkish club has ever made? In terms of global profile, Salah belongs in the conversation immediately. But calling him the undisputed No. 1 would ignore a list that includes Gheorghe Hagi, Roberto Carlos, Wesley Sneijder, Didier Drogba, Robin van Persie and Victor Osimhen.
A Superstar Arrival on a Different Scale
Trabzonspor turned Salah’s arrival into an event. Thousands of supporters welcomed him, while his presentation underlined just how much his signing meant beyond football alone.
The contract itself also reflected his commercial power. Trabzonspor disclosed a package worth €17 million per season, plus bonuses and a 20% share of revenue from products sold under his name. Salah was not brought in only for goals. His global reach was clearly part of the equation.
There is another element that makes the move stand out. Salah did not join one of Istanbul’s traditional giants. He chose Trabzonspor, giving the Black Sea club a level of worldwide attention rarely associated with one of its signings.
Hagi, Roberto Carlos, Drogba and Sneijder Set a Huge Standard
Turkish football has a long history of attracting major names.
Gheorghe Hagi moved from Barcelona to Galatasaray in 1996 for €3.75 million and became much more than a glamorous signing. He won four consecutive Turkish league titles and was part of the side that lifted the UEFA Cup in 2000. If the debate is about legacy, Hagi remains extraordinarily difficult to beat.
Roberto Carlos joined Fenerbahçe on a free transfer from Real Madrid in 2007, arriving as a World Cup winner and three-time Champions League champion. Wesley Sneijder, meanwhile, moved from Inter to Galatasaray for €7.5 million in 2013 at only 28 years old.
That same year, Didier Drogba arrived at Galatasaray on a free transfer, while Robin van Persie later left Manchester United for Fenerbahçe in a €6.5 million deal in 2015. Each arrived with a résumé capable of transforming the international perception of the league.
Victor Osimhen Changed the Financial Scale
If the discussion is about money and market power, Victor Osimhen has an argument no one else can match.
Galatasaray paid €75 million to Napoli in 2025, making the Nigerian the most expensive signing in the history of the Süper Lig. Transfermarkt still lists the deal as the competition record.
And Osimhen was not bought on reputation alone. During his previous season on loan at Galatasaray, he scored 37 goals in 41 appearances across all competitions, immediately proving his value before the permanent deal was completed.
That is why “greatest signing” can mean several different things. The biggest name. The highest fee. The player who arrived closest to his peak. Or the one who ultimately left the deepest mark.
Salah Is Already Building His Case
What strengthens Salah’s argument is that the hype did not stop at the airport.
After six Süper Lig appearances, he had already scored seven goals, moving to the top of the scoring chart. His biggest performance came against reigning champion Galatasaray, when he produced a hat-trick and an assist in Trabzonspor’s 4-0 win.
That changes the conversation. Salah did not arrive merely as one of the most famous footballers ever to play in Türkiye. He immediately started delivering on the pitch.
So, is he already the greatest signing in Süper Lig history? It is far too early to make that call. Hagi built a legacy, Drogba and Sneijder won trophies, Roberto Carlos brought enormous prestige to Fenerbahçe and Osimhen completely reset the financial ceiling of Turkish football.
But one conclusion is much easier to defend: considering his career, worldwide profile, commercial power and immediate performances, Mohamed Salah already belongs among the biggest signings the Süper Lig has ever seen.
What comes next will determine whether he remains part of that conversation — or eventually ends it.
