How Did the Historic Galatasaray vs Fenerbahçe Rivalry Begin?
Turkish soccer's most passionate rivalry began in 1909, but its early years were marked by a much closer relationship than many might imagine. This is the story of how Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe became fierce sporting rivals.
More than 117 years have passed since Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe first faced each other. Known as the Intercontinental Derby, the Istanbul showdown is one of the most iconic rivalries in world soccer, although its origins were very different from the fierce competition that defines it today.
To understand how this rivalry began, we must go back to the early 20th century, when soccer was gaining popularity across the Ottoman Empire.
Galatasaray's history began in 1905, when Ali Sami Yen and a group of students from the historic Galatasaray High School founded a team with the ambition of competing against the foreign clubs that dominated soccer in the city.
Two years later, in 1907, Fenerbahçe was established in Kadıköy, a district on Istanbul's Asian side.
The geographical location of both institutions became an important part of their identities: Galatasaray had its roots on the European side, while Fenerbahçe originated on the Asian side.
This distinction gave rise to the name Intercontinental Derby, although both clubs eventually developed large fan bases throughout Turkey.
The First Galatasaray vs Fenerbahçe Match

The first encounter took place on January 17, 1909, at Papazın Çayırı, the ground where Fenerbahçe's stadium now stands.
Galatasaray secured a 2-0 victory in that friendly, with Emin Bülend Serdaroğlu credited with scoring the first goal in the rivalry's history.
The Lions dominated the early years, keeping a clean sheet in each of the first seven meetings.
Fenerbahçe had to wait until January 4, 1914, to celebrate its first victory. In the eighth meeting between the clubs, the Yellow Canaries secured a 4-2 win, with Hasan Kamil Sporel scoring Fenerbahçe's first-ever derby goal.
When Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe Were on the Same Side
As hard as it may be to imagine today, Istanbul's fiercest rivals once considered forming a joint team. In the early 20th century, as Turkish soccer was developing and local clubs sought to compete against foreign opposition, cooperation between the two institutions was not such an unlikely idea.
According to research published in Galatasaray's official magazine in February 2003, Ali Sami Yen and Hulusi Bey, then officials of the two clubs, signed a document in 1912 outlining plans to create a combined team to face foreign opponents. The research even suggests that regulations had been drawn up for the proposed project.
Even more remarkably, the two clubs eventually did join forces on the field. In 1934, Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe formed a combined side known as FenerSaray to face foreign opposition. The team wore a shirt blending the clubs' colors: navy blue, yellow, and red.
It is an almost unimaginable image by today's standards: Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe players representing the same team. Yet it offers a fascinating reminder that their relationship was once far more complex than the fierce rivalry that defines it today.
The 1934 Match That Exposed Growing Tensions

As the decades passed, the sporting competition between the two sides became increasingly intense.
One of the clearest examples came on February 23, 1934, during an Istanbul League match at Taksim Stadium.
In the 60th minute, a confrontation between players escalated into a fight that eventually involved spectators. The match was abandoned, and sporting authorities handed suspensions to 17 players: nine from Fenerbahçe and eight from Galatasaray.
The incident became one of the earliest major examples of the tension that had come to characterize the fixture.
A Rivalry That Continues to Make History
More than a century later, Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe continue to contest a derby defined by history, identity, and passion.
The next chapter is scheduled for Monday, October 26, 2026, when Galatasaray hosts Fenerbahçe at RAMS Park in Matchday 9 of the Turkish Süper Lig.
What began as a competition between two young Istanbul clubs eventually became a rivalry spanning generations, remaining one of the most captivating spectacles in world soccer.
