Fenerbahçe got their 2026-27 campaign off to a disappointing start. The Istanbul side suffered a 2-1 defeat to Gençlerbirliği on Saturday in the opening round of the Turkish Super League, despite taking the lead and controlling much of the match.

Anderson Talisca put Fenerbahçe ahead in the 13th minute with the opening goal. However, their advantage did not last. Franco Tongya equalized in the 37th minute before Oğulcan Ülgün completed the comeback in the 56th.

The result is particularly frustrating for Fenerbahçe, who dominated possession and created plenty of opportunities. The visitors finished with around 70% possession and registered 20 shots, including 10 on target, but could not find a way to score the equalizer.

The defeat comes at an inconvenient time. Fenerbahçe must quickly turn their attention to Europe, as they will face Olympique Lyon on Tuesday, August 18, in the first leg of the Champions League playoff round.

A project under pressure

Fenerbahçe have made a significant investment in their squad during the transfer window, bringing in several high-profile players. Mason Greenwood, Sidiki Cherif, Romelu Lukaku and Nathan Aké are among their notable additions, while Vedat Muriqi has also returned to the club.

With such an ambitious project, the defeat against Gençlerbirliği serves as an early warning. Fenerbahçe showed plenty of attacking intent and created enough chances to win, but a lack of finishing and defensive mistakes ultimately cost them all three points.

Now comes the real test against Lyon. Fenerbahçe will need an immediate response if they want to keep their Champions League dream alive.
