Fenerbahçe Strikes First in Champions League Qualifying
Anderson Talisca's brilliant free-kick gave Fenerbahçe a 1-0 victory over Górnik Zabrze in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round, while Marco Asensio made his debut off the bench.
Fenerbahçe took the first step toward reaching the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Górnik Zabrze in the first leg of the second qualifying round. İsmail Kartal's side made the most of its home advantage and will now look to finish the job in the return leg.
The only goal of the match came in the 37th minute when Anderson Talisca produced a stunning left-footed free kick from the edge of the box, giving the Turkish side a deserved lead in the tie.
Kartal handed a starting debut to Nathan Aké, who was replaced at halftime, while several key players, including Ederson, Mason Greenwood and Spanish midfielder Marco Asensio, began the match on the bench.
Asensio entered the game in the 69th minute in place of Bartug Elmaz, making his first appearance in this season's European campaign as he continues to build his match fitness. Although he did not register a goal or an assist, the former Real Madrid star helped Fenerbahçe control possession and protect its narrow advantage during the closing stages.
Elsewhere, Yaya Touré enjoyed a winning start to his Champions League coaching career as Slovan Bratislava defeated Iberia 1999 by a 2-0 scoreline. Dinamo Zagreb also secured a valuable 1-1 draw away to Thun thanks to a late equalizer. Fenerbahçe now heads into the second leg with the upper hand, hoping to book its place in the next round of Europe's premier club competition.
