Chaos at Fenerbahçe: İsmail Kartal Resigns but President Refuses to Let Him Leave
The coach announced his departure minutes after the draw against Roma, only for Fenerbahçe’s president to respond with an extraordinary stance.
Fenerbahçe’s return to the Champions League after an 18-year absence ended in absolute chaos. Minutes after a 1-1 draw against Roma, head coach İsmail Kartal walked into his post-match press conference and unexpectedly announced his resignation.
The Italian side had taken the lead through Bryan Cristante before Archie Brown equalized in the second half. The result, however, quickly became an afterthought when Kartal revealed he had decided to step aside in order to, as he explained, “clear the way” for the club.
“I have resigned from my position, with the intention of never returning,” the 65-year-old said. The announcement apparently caught even his own dressing room by surprise. Brown learned about the resignation during a post-match interview and had to ask a Fenerbahçe press officer whether Kartal had really just stepped down as his coach.
A Bottle and Mounting Pressure Sparked the Decision
An incident earlier in the evening appears to have played a major role in Kartal’s dramatic decision. According to the Fenerbahçe hierarchy, a bottle thrown from the stands struck the coach during the match, leaving him deeply upset.
Club president Aziz Yıldırım later revealed that he had spoken directly with Kartal, who also complained about the mounting pressure surrounding the team.
The sporting context has not helped. Kartal returned in June for his fourth spell in charge of Fenerbahçe, but the team opened the Süper Lig campaign with two wins and two defeats. The draw against Roma came on a night that was supposed to celebrate the Istanbul giants’ long-awaited return to Europe’s biggest club competition.

Fenerbahçe President Refuses to Accept His Resignation
The story then took an even more extraordinary turn when Yıldırım publicly announced that he would not accept Kartal’s resignation. As far as the president is concerned, Kartal remains Fenerbahçe’s head coach regardless of what he had announced just minutes earlier.
“İsmail Kartal remains in charge,” Yıldırım insisted, calling on the club and its supporters to back the coach following the incident. The president went even further, suggesting Kartal would remain in the job for as long as he himself remains in charge of Fenerbahçe.
His explanation was remarkably emphatic: “There’s no need for him to say that he’ll continue. I am his senior, I told him to continue and that’s it. We are a family.” It leaves Fenerbahçe in an extraordinary situation: the coach says he is leaving and never intends to return, while the president insists he simply cannot go.
An Unexpected Crisis in the Middle of the Champions League
The episode threatens to turn Fenerbahçe’s Champions League comeback into an institutional crisis. A draw against Roma could have been viewed as a positive opening result, particularly after the Turkish side fought back in the second half.
Instead, the football has been completely overshadowed. The immediate question is whether Kartal will stand by his decision to leave or ultimately accept Yıldırım’s demand that he remain in charge.
Fenerbahçe waited 18 years for another Champions League night. Instead of simply celebrating their return to Europe’s elite, they ended it with a coach who resigned, a president who rejected his resignation and players who apparently had no idea what was happening.
