Can José Mourinho and Captain Chaos lead Fenerbahce to glory?
The Special One and Jhon Duran unite aiming to overcome Galatasaray's domination
A few bets were lost when Jose Mourinho not only completed his first season in the Turkish Super Lig with Fenerbahce but came back for more.
Sure, a few items were ticked off the bingo card last year: Mourinho calling out referees, Mourinho provoking opposition players, Mourinho touting conspiracy theories and even Mourinho picking up a touchline ban for grabbing the nose of Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk.
However, Mourinho is back in Istanbul on the bench at a club which finished a mammoth nine points behind Gala last season.
While Fenerbahce sat out the upcoming first weekend of the Super Lig, successfully handling a Champions League qualifying double-header against Feyenoord, Mourinho can now focus on the huge task at hand, which is overcoming Galatasaray and preventing their rivals from winning a fourth Super Lig title in a row.
If Fenerbahce are to claim their first league crown in 12 seasons, fans will be looking to a new Colombian striker to deliver the goods. One year ago, Jhon Duran scored 10 goals in half-a-season for Aston Villa in both the Premier League and the Champions League, despite largely coming off the bench.
As well as being a battling presence for opposition defenders on the pitch, Duran was also a handful off it with social media controversies and a reportedly lax approach to timekeeping. However, Unai Emery was willing to put up with everything, knowing the potential talent of the forward.
Eventually, the Colombian's constant complaints about wanting to leave, demanding more playing time as well as irritating his teammates saw the player move to Al-Nassr for the huge fee of 77 million Euros last January.
Six months later, that fee has been all but written off by Cristiano Ronaldo’s team with Duran sent on loan to Fenerbahce, where the man-management skills of Mourinho will be sorely tested by a player branded Captain Chaos by Aston Villa supporters. However, if
The Special One can bring some order to Duran's madness, then Fener could be a real threat to Galatasaray in other dramatic title race.
