Fenerbahçe Respond With a Statement Win in Istanbul

Fenerbahçe secured their first three points of the season after defeating Konyaspor 4-2 on Matchday 2 of the Süper Lig. The Istanbul side responded after losing their season opener and celebrated in front of their supporters in a match filled with goals, impressive performances and the highly anticipated debut of Romelu Lukaku.

The hosts came out needing a victory and were quickly rewarded. In the sixth minute, Marco Asensio fired a shot following a free kick and Deniz Ertaş responded with a great save, but the rebound fell perfectly for Vedat Muriqi, who simply tapped the ball home to make it 1-0.

Konyaspor responded immediately. In the 10th minute, Yhoan Andzouana spotted a huge gap between the center backs and played an excellent ball through to Ebrima Colley, who found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper and finished past Ederson to level the match.

Greenwood and Asensio Make the Difference

The game was wide open, and another important moment arrived in the 16th minute. A possible handball inside the penalty area following a header from Mason Greenwood was reviewed, and the referee awarded a penalty.

Greenwood stepped up but hit a weak effort straight down the middle. The goalkeeper managed to stop it, but once again the rebound favored Fenerbahçe. The Englishman took advantage of the second opportunity and put the ball into the net to restore the lead.

With the score at 2-1, the hosts began to look much more comfortable.

Konyaspor tried to cause problems on the counterattack and found some spaces against a defense that struggled at times, but Fenerbahçe were much more dangerous whenever they entered the opposition half.

In the 32nd minute, Marco Asensio stepped up. After a good assist from Greenwood, the Spaniard found himself in space and unleashed an unstoppable left-footed strike beyond Ertaş. A brilliant goal made it 3-1 for a Fenerbahçe side beginning to take complete control.

The advantage could have been even bigger before halftime. Kerem Aktürkoğlu received a brilliant through ball from Asensio and produced an excellent individual move inside the penalty area, but his effort hit the side netting.

Fenerbahçe headed into the locker room as the clearly superior side, producing an impressive performance in their first home match of the season.

Greenwood Completes His Brace as Lukaku Makes His Debut

The second half began with Konyaspor attempting to push higher up the pitch, but any hopes of a comeback suffered another blow almost immediately.

In the 48th minute, a mistake while playing out from the back ended with the ball at the feet of Vedat Muriqi, who found Greenwood. The Englishman finished first time to complete his brace and turn the match into a rout.

With Fenerbahçe leading 4-1, the hosts lowered the intensity slightly and Konyaspor began to enjoy their best spell of the match.

That was when Ederson stepped up.

Marko Jevtović tested him with a powerful long-range strike before Andzouana also forced the Brazilian into action. Attempts from Enis Bardhi and Deniz Türüç followed, along with a one-on-one opportunity that the goalkeeper dealt with brilliantly.

The visitors continued to pile on the pressure, but they kept running into Ederson.

In the middle of that spell came one of the most anticipated moments of the afternoon. In the 67th minute, Romelu Lukaku entered the pitch to play his first minutes for Fenerbahçe.

The Belgian's adventure in Turkey had officially begun.

Fenerbahçe Secure Their First Three Points

Konyaspor never stopped searching for another goal and finally found their reward too late.

In the 90+3rd minute, Blaž Kramer produced a spectacular bicycle kick that crashed against the post. The rebound fell to Türüç, who simply tapped the ball into the net with Ederson already beaten to make it 4-2.

There was no time for anything else.

Fenerbahçe secured their first three points of the Süper Lig with a much more convincing attacking performance. Greenwood finished as one of the standout players with a brace, Asensio produced a spectacular goal and Ederson stepped up when Konyaspor applied their strongest pressure.

And on top of that, Istanbul got its first glimpse of Lukaku in the yellow and blue shirt.

An almost perfect afternoon for Fenerbahçe in their home opener.
