Torino 1-2 AC Milan: Rabiot inspires opening-day win for Amorim

  • Ruben Amorim made a winning start to life in Serie A as second-half goals from Alphadjo Cisse and Adrien Rabiot saw off Torino on Sunday.

Adrien Rabiot grabbed a goal and an assist off the bench as AC Milan began life under Ruben Amorim with a 2-1 against Torino in their first Serie A match of 2026-27.

Rabiot teed up Alphadjo Cisse eight minutes after replacing Ardon Jashari, before finding the back of the net himself to hand the Rossoneri all three points.

Milan started brightly as Cisse struck the side-netting before Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Pervis Estupinan both had efforts blocked in quick succession from close range.

Samuel Chukwueze then brought the first save out of Diego Mascardi after half-an-hour, but that was the closest either team came to opening the scoring in a low-key first half.

Amorim turned to his bench just before the hour and introduced experienced midfield duo Luka Modric and Rabiot, and it was the latter who helped put Milan ahead in the 64th minute as his cross was collected by Cisse, who curled beyond Mascardi.

Just two minutes later, Rabiot got himself on the scoresheet. After gathering the ball on the right-hand side, Chukwueze's inviting cross to the back post was tucked into the roof of the net by the Frenchman on the volley.

Torino did, however, respond well to going two goals down as Alieu Njie rattled the left post before Pietro Comuzzo's first-time attempt sailed over the crossbar.

The hosts did pull one back in second-half stoppage time when Che Adams brilliantly hooked Gvidas Gineitis' free-kick beyond Mike Maignan, but Milan were able to hold on.

Rabiot gets Amorim up and running

Ahead of kick-off, Amorim stated that Milan's Serie A opener was a must win if they were to make a strong start to their project, and he was able to deliver on that target.

In doing so, Amorim became the first foreign coach to win his first Serie A match in charge of Milan since Leonardo in August 2009, which also came away from home against Siena (2-1), and he had Rabiot to thank for his contribution off the bench.

Rabiot had been tipped for a summer departure following Massimiliano Allegri's exit at the end of last season, even after finishing 2025-26 with the joint-third-most league goal involvements for the Rossoneri (10 – six goals, four assists), but he proved his worth to Amorim here.

There was also an impressive display from Chukwueze, who appears set for a big role to play at Milan having spent last year on loan at Fulham. He recorded team-high totals for touches in the opposition box (nine), chances created (four) and possession won (seven).

Sterner tests await Milan, but Amorim will be pleased with how his side performed in their first competitive match under his tutelage. They finished with an expected goals (xG) total of 1.61 from their 19 shots, compared to Torino's 1.01 from their eight attempts.
