Roma must not get swept up in the enthusiasm of Lazio win, Gasperini urges
Roma took a giant step towards the Champions League after beating Lazio, but Gian Piero Gasperini said the job was far from over.
Gian Piero Gasperini urged his Roma team not to get swept up in the enthusiasm of their victory over Lazio, which pushed them closer to Champions League qualification.
Roma won Sunday's Derby della Capitale at the Stadio Olimpico 2-0, with Gianluca Mancini scoring in either half to move the Giallorossi up to fourth in Serie A.
Heading into the final day of the season, Roma are two points clear of Como and Juventus, after the Bianconeri fell to a shock 2-0 defeat at home to struggling Fiorentina.
The Opta supercomputer has assigned Roma a 73.4% chance of finishing in the Champions League places, as they travel to already-relegated Hellas Verona next Sunday.
But despite their victory over Lazio, Gasperini remained wary of the situation his team find themselves in, even if their fate is now in their own hands.
"We still have another 90 minutes to play. It is an extraordinary league this season with so many teams in a few points," Gasperini told DAZN Italia.
"We're happy, it all depends on us now next week and no longer on our opponents. Now we've got to concentrate on this target that we want at all costs.
"We had hoped others might slip up. Today it was Juve, but we did well to concentrate on our own game against a quality Lazio side.
"It was a tough first half. We broke the deadlock from a dead-ball situation, and then did better after the break.
"I congratulate these lads, but now we mustn't let ourselves get swept up in the enthusiasm, because there is one more step to take in this incredible chase.
"We can celebrate today, then immediately get down to thinking about an achievement that would be truly remarkable for us."
Roma's victory saw them reach 70 points in a Serie A campaign for the first time since 2019-20, when Paulo Fonseca was in charge.
They have also won their last four league matches, the first time they have done so in a single Serie A season since a run of seven between February and March 2025.
But, more importantly, they are closing in on a return to the Champions League for the first time since 2018-19, when they reached the round of 16.
Key to that success has been Paulo Dybala, though he cast doubt over his future with Roma ahead of kick-off, with the Argentine yet to hold talks over a new contract.
The 32-year-old has made 139 appearances for the Giallorossi in all competitions, scoring 45 goals as well as providing 26 assists for his team-mates.
Dybala put in an impressive display against Lazio and has now been involved in at least one goal in two consecutive Serie A matches for the first time since October 2025, while he also finished with team-high totals for chances created (two) and passes in the final third (11).
And Gasperini is hopeful his contract situation can be resolved. When asked whether this was Dybala's last home game for Roma, the Italian said: "That is for next week.
"The owners are here, fortunately, and it can all become easier if you get an immediate response. Both the player and the club want to continue together.
"I would be very happy for him and the many players whose contracts are running down, who showed professionalism and love for the club.
"We won the derby today, we haven't yet achieved our objective for the season, but nobody can doubt these players now."
