Luka Modric Extends His Contract and Wants to Bring Milan Back to the Top
Modric begins a new chapter at Milan after leaving Real Madrid, with the ambition to return the club to the top and regain the lost mystique at San Siro.
A historical legacy in Madrid
Luka Modric closed a golden chapter at Real Madrid to start a new challenge in Italy. After thirteen years at the Santiago Bernabéu, the Croatian won 28 titles, including five Champions League trophies, and played 597 matches, a figure that places him among the most iconic players of the modern era. His departure came after the elimination in the Club World Cup against PSG, and his destination seemed set; Massimiliano Allegri, in his return to the Rossoneri bench, had already anticipated his arrival as a luxury reinforcement.
The challenge at San Siro
Modric signed a one-year contract with an option to extend it and made his ambition clear: "I am very happy to be at a great club like Milan to start a new chapter in my career. We want to bring you a lot of joy and wonderful moments this year, make you feel proud, and celebrate many victories together," he expressed on Instagram. One year later he has decided to renew his contract for one more year, the 2018 Ballon d'Or winner seeks to bring experience and leadership to a team going thru a delicate moment.
A Milan in crisis and without Europe
The 2024-25 season was a tough blow for the Rossoneri, who finished eighth in Serie A and missed out on European competitions for the first time since the financial fair play sanction in 2019-20. Paulo Fonseca lasted barely six months in the position and his successor, Sergio Conceicao, won the Supercoppa Italiana in January but was dismissed five months later. After a 2025-26 season that left a bitter taste after missing out on Champions League qualification, under the leadership of Ruben Amorim and a Croatian with higher aspirations, they will try to return to the top this year.
