Inter president Giuseppe Marotta has confirmed the club will be appointing Cristian Chivu as Simone Inzaghi's replacement.

Inzaghi departed Inter on Tuesday, ending his four-year stay before joining Al-Hilal.

His decision to leave Inter came just days after they were beaten 5-0 in the Champions League final by Paris Saint-Germain, having also missed out on the Scudetto by a single point to Napoli.

Cesc Fabregas was initially thought to be the favourite to replace Inzaghi, but Como's president, Mirwan Suwarso, confirmed they had refused the advance from Inter.

As such, Italian media reported former Inter player Chivu was the new front-runner, and though the club are yet to make an official announcement due to details still being finalised with Parma, Marotta confirmed the news at the Serie A festival on Friday.

"To win, money alone is not enough; expertise, planning, experience, and many other qualities are needed," Marotta said.

"All these qualities are what we believe to have, for example, in the case of Chivu. I'm saying this because I cannot give official confirmation as there is a bureaucratic aspect we need to overcome with Parma."

Chivu has reportedly signed a two-year contract through to June 2027 with Inter after leaving Parma.

The 44-year-old, who spent seven years with Inter before announcing his retirement, spent just three months at Parma in his first managerial job, joining them in February.

In his 13 games, he managed just three wins (D7 L3), registering a 23.1% win rate as Parma averaged just 1.2 points per game during his tenure.

Chivu's first game in charge would be against Monterrey in the upcoming Club World Cup, with Inter's opening match taking place on June 17 at the Rose Bowl in California.
