Goodbye San Siro: Milan and Inter to Demolish Iconic Stadium and Build a New Home
San Siro is nearing its final chapter: Milan and Inter have the green light to build a new stadium and change the city’s history.
The End of an Era in Milan
The legendary Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, better known as San Siro, is set to disappear. The Milan City Council has approved the sale of the land to AC Milan and Inter for €197 million, giving the two giants the green light for a project that will reshape the future of football in the city. The decision, passed by 24 votes to 20 after a marathon session, marks a historic turning point for Italian and European football.
Both clubs issued a joint statement describing the decision as a “historic and decisive step” and promised to deliver a world-class stadium that will become “a symbol of football passion worldwide.”
A Billion-Euro Project
The plan involves an investment of €1.2 billion to build not only a new stadium but also a large fan-focused recreational district divided into five areas, including a museum, shops, hotels, football fields, and more. Architectural firms Foster & Partners and Manica have been entrusted with the project, which is expected to be completed by 2031 — just in time for Euro 2032.
Forecasts suggest the redevelopment will generate an economic impact of €3.1 billion, boost GDP by €1.4 billion, and create over 16,000 jobs by 2035.
What Happens to San Siro?
The project calls for the demolition of 91% of the current stadium, including the first and third tiers and most of the second. The remaining sections will be preserved and converted into a park and pedestrian pathways, leaving a lasting tribute to a venue that hosted legendary Champions League nights and unforgettable derbies.
After nearly a decade of attempts, Milan and Inter are closer than ever to having a home of their own. For now, the focus returns to the pitch: Inter host Slavia Prague in the Champions League, while Milan prepare for a huge Serie A clash against Juventus.
