Genoa sack Vieira after winless start to Serie A season
Just shy of his first anniversary at Genoa, Patrick Vieira has been relieved of his duties after overseeing a poor start to the campaign.
Patrick Vieira has been sacked by Serie A's bottom club Genoa after a winless start to their domestic campaign.
Vieira, who replaced Alberto Gilardino just under a year ago, leaves the club having taken just three points from their first nine games in the top-flight this season.
Indeed, Genoa have lost six of their nine Serie A matches in 2025-26, only losing more than six after 10 matches on two occasions, coming in 1967-58 and 1959-60.
The 49-year-old took over the club last year when they were down in 17th, guiding them to a 13th-placed finish, but he has been unable to maintain that momentum.
"Genoa CFC announces that Patrick Vieira is no longer the coach of the first team," a Genoa statement said on Saturday.
"The technical leadership of the first team has been entrusted on an interim basis to Roberto Murgita, assisted by Domenico Criscito."
Overall, Vieira won 10 of his 37 matches in charge across all competitions (D12 L15), finishing with a win rate of 27%.
Genoa are next in action on Monday when they travel to MAPEI Stadium to take on Sassuolo, who are 10th in the standings after nine games of their campaign.
They have lost their last two matches against newly promoted sides in Serie A, and have only once suffered three consecutive defeats against teams from Serie B in the three points for a win era, between April and December 2012.
