Edin Džeko Leaves Mourinho and Returns to Serie A: He will Play for Fiorentina
Veteran striker Edin Džeko is set for a new adventure in Italian football. After successfully passing his medical on Thursday, the Bosnian forward became the latest addition to Fiorentina for the upcoming season. His return to Serie A marks a new chapter in a career full of goals and achievements across Europe’s top leagues.
A return to Italy: new challenge in Florence
Fiorentina officially announced the striker’s arrival via their social media channels: “Edin Džeko has completed his medical and has arrived at Viola Park,” the club posted, confirming his upcoming signing. According to local media, Džeko will sign a one-year deal with an option to extend for a second season — a move that has excited fans of the Tuscan club.
Džeko, 38, recently left Fenerbahçe in Turkey, where he spent the last two seasons. Now, he returns to a league he knows well, having already played eight seasons in Italy: six with AS Roma (2015–2021), under coach José Mourinho, and two with Inter Milan (2021–2023), where he featured in the Champions League final in 2023.
A career full of experience and silverware
The Bosnian striker boasts one of the most impressive careers among European forwards of his generation. Before arriving in Italy, he stood out in the Premier League with Manchester City, where he won the club’s first-ever English league title in the 2011–12 season. He also made his mark in the German Bundesliga with Wolfsburg, winning the title there as well, and began his professional career with Teplice in the Czech Republic.
Despite approaching the age of 40 — which he will reach in March 2026 — Džeko remains in excellent physical shape and continues to display the goal-scoring instinct that has defined his career. His signing is a bet on experience for a Fiorentina side aiming to solidify its place among the top teams in the Italian league.
With this move, the club adds a proven goal scorer and leader to its attack. Edin Džeko is expected to bring presence, maturity, and offensive strength to a team hoping to compete both domestically and in European competitions this season.
