Sporting Braga of Portugal Has Dismissed Its Coach

  • Sporting Braga dismissed the Spanish Carlos Vicens as the first team coach this Tuesday, a day after the home defeat against Gil Vicente.

Sporting Braga announced this Tuesday the dismissal of Spaniard Carlos Vicens as first-team head coach, one day after the defeat suffered at home against Gil Vicente (1-2) on matchday eight of the Portuguese League. The Portuguese club reacted swiftly to the setback and brought an end to the Mallorcan coach's spell in charge

In a statement published on its website, Braga said that Vicens "leaves, with immediate effect, his duties as head coach of the team," and thanked him for "the professionalism, dedication and commitment shown in the service of the club." With these words, the entity acknowledged the work carried out by the coach during his time with the team.

Vicens, a native of Mallorca, had joined Braga last season to take on what was his first experience as a head coach, after several years working as an assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. That spell alongside the Catalan coach helped him make the leap to a top job.

In his first campaign, the coach led Braga to fourth place in the Portuguese League and to the semi-finals of the Europa League where the team knocked out Betis in the quarter-finals. Both results were the standout achievements of his time at the club.

Braga currently sit ninth in the Portuguese League, with three wins, two draws and two defeats.
