Mourinho Clarifies Rumors About Real Madrid
The rumors have once again placed José Mourinho in the orbit of Real Madrid, but the Portuguese manager has tried to tone down the speculation. In an interview with the Italian newspaper Il Giornale, he made it clear that his only focus at the moment is helping Benfica qualify for the next UEFA Champions League.
“The Special One” stated that his sole concern is winning the next three matches with “The Eagles”, results that could secure an important objective to close the season. Mourinho knows the club still has a lot at stake and does not want to shift attention toward his future.
Clearly, these comments do not completely stop the rumors about a potential return to Real Madrid. Mourinho is an experienced coach and understands how to handle these kinds of situations. He also does not want to add extra pressure on his squad during a decisive stage of the campaign, choosing instead to stay fully focused on the present.
Focus on the Present: Benfica and the UEFA Champions League Race
During the interview, he also reflected on different moments of his career. The Portuguese coach said one of the most special clubs he has managed was AS Roma. He even compared winning the UEFA Conference League to other major titles and acknowledged that his connection with the Roman fans was something he had rarely experienced, even surpassing some of his European triumphs.
Mourinho also used the opportunity to criticize modern football. He claimed that many coaches reach top clubs based on how well they market themselves publicly and delivered a strong statement: “The idea that strategy is more important than results is the biggest lie in football.”

Meanwhile, Benfica continues fighting to finish the season strongly. The title looks difficult, as they are seven points behind Porto with three matches remaining, but qualification for the UEFA Champions League is still in their own hands.
The Portuguese manager also has a special clause in his contract. Although his deal runs until 2027, he has a ten-day exit window at the end of the season that would allow him to leave without financial penalty.
For that reason, Mourinho is in no rush. He knows time is on his side and that when it comes to his future, he always prefers to wait for the right moment.
