Luís Pinto, Mourinho’s Disciple Rising Through Portuguese Football
Inspired by José Mourinho, Luís Pinto has become one of the fastest-rising coaches in Portuguese football, climbing through every division before lifting silverware with Vitória de Guimarães.
The story of Luís Pinto is one of steady growth, dedication and ambition. Although many describe him as an "elevator coach" due to his rapid rise through Portugal's football pyramid, Pinto insists that his success is the result of years of preparation rather than a meteoric breakthrough.
His coaching journey began while he was still an active player. The emergence of José Mourinho as a global coaching icon had a profound impact on him. Mourinho's triumphs with FC Porto inspired Pinto to see coaching as a career path and changed his understanding of the game's tactical and leadership dimensions.
At the age of 23, he became an assistant coach at Trofense, officially leaving his playing career behind. Several years of learning followed before he took charge of teams across Portugal's lower divisions. His work with clubs such as União de Leiria, Mirandela, Felgueiras, Real Massamá, Lusitânia Lourosa and Leça helped establish his reputation as a coach capable of building competitive teams and achieving consistent progress.
The breakthrough came at Tondela, where he guided the club to the second-division title and promotion. That success opened the door to a historic opportunity with Vitória de Guimarães.
Despite major squad changes, Pinto led Vitória to victory in the Taça da Liga, defeating Portuguese powerhouses FC Porto, Sporting CP and SC Braga along the way. The trophy ended a 13-year title drought and became one of the most memorable achievements in the club's modern history.
Now regarded as one of Portugal's brightest coaching talents, Pinto remains ambitious. A strong believer in attacking football and aggressive pressing, he has openly admitted that managing in LaLiga is one of his long-term goals as he continues preparing for the next chapter of his career.
