Matchday 4 of the 2026-27 Liga Portugal kicks off this Friday with an interesting matchup in Vila do Conde. Rio Ave host Sporting CP at the Estádio do Rio Ave Futebol Clube, with both teams coming off important victories last weekend.
Sporting are looking to remain close to the top of the standings after recording two consecutive victories, while Rio Ave finally picked up their first points of the season and now face a much tougher test against one of the main title contenders.
Rio Ave Arrive With Confidence After Their First Victory
The start of the season has not been easy for Rio Ave.
Georgios Sylaidopoulos’ side began their league campaign with a 1-0 defeat against Gil Vicente before falling 2-0 at home to FC Porto. However, the response finally came on Matchday 3.
Rio Ave defeated Estoril 2-0 away from home thanks to goals from Jalen Blesa and Tamble Monteiro, securing their first three points of the campaign. Blesa opened the scoring in the 15th minute before Monteiro sealed the victory in the second half.
Now, the challenge becomes considerably more difficult.
Against Sporting, Rio Ave will need to remain organized defensively and capitalize on any opportunities they can create on the counterattack. After failing to score in their first two matches, the victory over Estoril also provided an important confidence boost for their attack.
Sporting Look for Their Third Consecutive Victory
Sporting CP began the season by surrendering a two-goal advantage in a 2-2 draw against Estrela da Amadora, but Rui Borges’ team have responded since then.
The Lions earned their first victory by defeating Vitória SC 3-2 before collecting another three points with a 3-1 win over FC Alverca at the Estádio José Alvalade.
In that most recent match, Maxi Araújo opened the scoring, an own goal doubled the advantage and Luis Suárez scored the third after an assist from Geny Catamo. The result gave Sporting their second consecutive victory before the trip to Vila do Conde.
Attacking depth remains one of Rui Borges’ biggest weapons. Fotis Ioannidis, Luis Suárez, Rodrigo Zalazar, Geny Catamo and Maxi Araújo provide different options for a team that has scored eight goals in its first three league matches.
A Difficult Test for Rio Ave
On paper, Sporting enter as the favorites, but the Lions cannot afford to underestimate their opponents.
Rio Ave are coming off their first victory of the season and will now return home looking to build on that result in front of their supporters. Their ability to remain compact and attack open spaces could cause problems for a Sporting side expected to control possession and dictate the tempo of the match.
For the hosts, defeating one of Portuguese soccer’s biggest clubs would confirm their turnaround after a difficult start to the campaign.
For Sporting, the objective is different: secure a third consecutive victory and continue gaining ground in the battle near the top of Liga Portugal.
Everything is ready in Vila do Conde.
