Jorgelina Cardoso Message After Di Maria Farewell to Benfica: Emotion, Gratitude, and a Nod to Rosario Central
Angel Di Maria experienced an emotional night in what marked his farewell from Benfica. The Argentine star couldn’t hold back tears after a 3–1 defeat against Sporting Lisbon in the Portuguese Cup final a match that turned out to be his last in the red jersey. Supporting him through the moment was his wife, Jorgelina Cardoso, who posted a heartfelt message on social media that quickly resonated with fans.

Tears in Lisbon
The Estadio Nacional bore witness to the end of an era. Despite the disappointing result, the image of Di María in tears on the bench moved fans and neutrals alike. The Rosario native had announced days earlier that his time at Benfica was coming to an end, and the cup final became his official goodbye.
From the stands, Cardoso not only watched the match but also dedicated an emotional message that reflected her pride in both the man and the professional.
“If there one thing I’m more and more certain of every day, it’s your will to win — every match and every final as if you’ve never won anything before. That’s what makes you great,” she wrote in an Instagram story, alongside a photo she took from the stands.
Her post didn’t just show her unconditional support it also lit a spark of hope among Rosario Central fans:
“That left foot still isn’t ready to rest… and I’ll be right by your side, offering my shoulder once again so you can pause, think, breathe deep, and carry on. I love you with all my strength,” she concluded, adding two blue and yellow heart emojis the colors of Rosario Central.
Di Maria response and an uncertain future
Di Maria quickly responded with words of appreciation that showcased his identity as a player:
“Thank you, my love. This is who I am, and I can’t change. I’ve always given my all for every shirt I’ve worn. And I’ll keep doing it because that’s who I am,” wrote the 37-year-old, leaving the door open to continue playing.
While his next steps remain unclear, all signs point to the 2022 World Cup winner not continuing in Europe. He has turned down lucrative offers from abroad and is reportedly already organizing his family move back to Rosario, as he reflects on whether to continue playing or retire.
Rosario Central or retirement?
The big question now is whether Di Maria will return to Rosario Central the club where it all began or officially hang up his boots. Rumors are swirling, but no final decision has been made.
His potential appearance in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup also remains up in the air. While some reports suggest he could be part of Benfica squad for the tournament in the United States, renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently claimed the Argentine will not be part of the squad traveling with the Eagles.
What certain is that wherever Di Maria plays next or even if he decides to call it a career he leaves Benfica as a respected figure, with the unwavering affection of a fanbase that admired his talent. Now, the ball is in his court.
