When Does the 2026–27 Premier League Season Start?
The new Premier League season begins on August 21, with defending champion Arsenal hosting newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium after an extended summer shaped by the 2026 World Cup.
The Premier League is almost back. The 2026/27 season officially begins on Friday, August 21, when defending champion Arsenal hosts newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium at 8:00 p.m. BST. It will launch a campaign that runs until May 30, 2027 and once again brings together some of the biggest clubs in world soccer.
A later start after the World Cup

This season begins one week later than usual because of the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup. The tournament final was played on July 19, leaving only 33 days between the end of the World Cup and the opening Premier League fixture.
According to the league, the later start also provides 89 clear days from the end of the 2025/26 domestic campaign. The schedule will feature 33 weekends and five midweek match rounds, while clubs are guaranteed at least 60 hours between fixtures during the congested Christmas and New Year period.
Arsenal begins its title defense

Arsenal will have the honor of opening the campaign after winning the 2025/26 Premier League title. Their first opponent, Coventry City, will immediately experience the difficulty of returning to England’s top division with a trip to the defending champion.
The rest of Matchweek 1 also offers several major fixtures. Hull City hosts Manchester United on Saturday, while Manchester City welcomes AFC Bournemouth on Sunday.
One of the most attractive games takes place later that afternoon, when Newcastle United hosts Liverpool at St James’ Park. The opening round concludes on Monday, August 24 with Fulham against Chelsea.
Three clubs return to the Premier League

The 2026/27 campaign welcomes Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City following their promotions from the Championship. They replace relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers, Burnley and West Ham United.
Coventry faces the most demanding possible introduction against Arsenal, while Hull begins at home against Manchester United. Ipswich, meanwhile, hosts Sunderland in its first Premier League match back.
Their arrival refreshes the 20-team field and introduces three different promotion stories into a season already shaped by an unusual international calendar.
When does the Premier League season end?
The final round is scheduled for Sunday, May 30, 2027, when all 10 matches will kick off simultaneously at 4:00 p.m. BST. The season therefore concludes one week before the Champions League final on June 5.
For now, August 21 is the key date. After a summer dominated by the World Cup, Arsenal and Coventry City will bring Premier League soccer back and officially begin another race for the English title.
